  Whether it be the result of fearful experiences during the formative period of early life, anxiety from separation of siblings or family, or stress from loud noises and the disruption to normal life as a result of the pandemic, these emotional upsets can result in a seriously unhappy pet.

  But it is not just environmental situations and influences that create this negative state. Anxiety can also be passed down through family lines, and can be a normal aspect of evolution.

  Another major source of fear and stress is poor nutrition. As species diversity within the dog’s microbiome reduce, so too can behavioural instability increase. Gut dysbiosis is marked by an increase in behavioural volatility leading to a marked decrease in social amicability and domestic harmony.

  A dogs resting energy requirement (RER) is the number of calories your dog should be fed in order to maintain their ideal weight, calcuated as follows:

  ‘Ideal Weight in Kgs’ x 30 + 70 = kcal per day

  e.g. 10kg Ideal Weight = 10 x 30 + 70 = 370 kcal per day.

  Please note this is for your dogs ENTIRE daily food intake, including treats. If you feed a lot of treats, check the caloric content of the treats and reduce your dog’s food by about the amount of calories you are feeding him in treats.

  Because dog foods are complete and balanced and treats are not, however, you shouldn’t replace too many of his food calories with treats.
